Today’s map shows gasoline tax rates in each state as of July 2019, using recently released data from the American Petroleum Institute. States levy gas taxes in a variety of ways, including per-gallon excise taxes collected at the pump, excise taxes imposed on wholesalers which are passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices, and sales taxes that apply to the purchase of gasoline. No state rates have changed since July 2018, when Louisiana’s declined from 5.0 to 4.45 percent. The District of Columbia’s sales tax rate increased to 6 percent from 5.75 percent. Sales tax rates differ by state, but sales tax bases also impact how much revenue is collected from a tax and how the tax affects the economy. How tax brackets work. The United States has a progressive tax system, meaning people with higher taxable incomes pay higher federal income tax rates. California, Hawaii, Oregon, Minnesota, and New Jersey have some of the highest state income tax rates in the country. At the other end of the scale, seven states have no tax on earned income at all. Another nine have a flat tax rate—everyone pays the same percentage regardless of how much income they earn. Based on this chart Oregon taxpayers pay 8.4% of their total income to state and local taxes. Washington taxpayers pay 8.2%. Very close. However, the above chart provides a rather crude measurement of comparative state and local tax burdens, since everybody is lumped together regardless of income.
